Midstream Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs)

Instructions for Use

Please note that BabySnark is no longer offering OPKs for sale (only because for the most part, they just aren't a particularly popular product!). However, the instructions will remain on the site for informational purposes, as they generally are valid instructions for all OPKs.

The MidStream LH One-Step Ovulation Test helps you determine when you are most fertile by identifying when the LH hormone surge occurs, or more precisely, when LH hormone levels are highest in the system. The test device is calibrated to an analytical sensitivity of 25 mIU/ml. This is approximately 35% more sensitive than the 40mIU/ml established by the Second International Standard of the World Health Organization.

Luteinizing hormone (LH) is always present in human urine. LH increases dramatically just prior to ovulation (known as an "LH surge"). This LH surge triggers ovulation. Because the egg can be fertilized only 6 to 24 hours after ovulation, detecting ovulation in advance by testing for the LH surge is very useful for women who are trying to conceive.

This shows a typical result starting with migration of the sample across the test panel, development of the control line, and then development of the test line. If the test line is faint or lighter than the control line, the result is negative for LH surge. If the test line becomes as dark as, or darker than, the control line, the result is positive for LH surge. An LH surge may last only a few hours, so one can obtain a positive result and then later in the day obtain a negative result. (The positive result is still valid.) Ovulation usually occurs within 12-48 hours after a positive test result.
