Omron Digital BBT Thermometer
How to Take Accurate Temperatures.
To
obtain an accurate basal temperature, you must take your
temperature immediately upon awakening in the morning. For best
results, your temperature should be taken at the same time each
morning. Any activity may raise your temperature, so don't get
out of bed until after you've taken your temperature. Don't go to
the bathroom, don't eat or drink anything, and don't smoke until
after taking your temperature. Cold drinks lower mouth
temperature; hot drinks, smoking and exercise cause higher
temperatures. Using an electric blanket or heating pad can
affect your temperature. If you do use one, it should be kept
at the same setting each night throughout the time you are
taking your temperature (i.e., every day for the entire month).
Should You Use the Oral, Vaginal or Rectal Method?
Since
temperatures taken at different sites can vary, it is important
to select one method and then always take your temperature the
same way. You must use either the oral, vaginal
or rectal method, but should never alternate between any of the
methods. Using more than one method will provide inaccurate
results.
Taking Your Basal Temperature – Oral Method
|
Place a disposable probe cover over the tip.
|
|
Push the on/off button located beside the display
window. Hold the button down to recall the last
measured temperature. The thermometer will beep
and the display will
read: "188.8°F M".
This is a function check indicating the thermometer is
working properly. Next, the thermometer will
read "L°F".
|
|
The °F symbol will flash continuously when the
thermometer is ready to be used. Please note that the
upside-down triangle symbol indicates a low battery.
See instructions for replacing the battery (below).
Do not expect an accurate temperature reading if this
low battery indicator is present. An
"Err" message in the window indicates that
the thermometer is not functioning properly.
|
|
Don't drink or eat anything, exercise, smoke or
perform any other activities before taking your
temperature.
|
|
Place the sensor tip well under the tongue.
|
|
When the peak temperature is reached, the °F
symbol will stop flashing, and the thermometer will
beep repeatedly. NOTE: It is not necessary to hear
the beep to ensure the peak temperature has been
reached. When the °F symbol stops flashing and
the display reads a consistent temperature, the peak
temperature has been reached.
|
|
Read
and record the temperature and time for reference.
The result will automatically be stored in the memory.
|
|
Push
the on/off button to turn the thermometer off. If you
forget to turn off the thermometer, it will shut off
automatically in approximately 10 minutes.

Taking Your Basal Temperature – Vaginal Method.
Please seek
guidance from your health care professional.
Taking Your Basal Temperature – Rectal Method.
Lubricate the
tip of the thermometer with a water-soluble lubricant or
petroleum jelly. Lie on your side with knees slightly bent.
With one hand, gently slide the tip of the thermometer no more
than 1/2-inch into the rectum. Once used rectally, the
thermometer should not be used orally or vaginally (for
sanitary reasons).
Caring for Your Basal Thermometer.
Before and
after each use, wash the tip of the thermometer with warm (not
hot) soapy water, or wipe the area with isopropyl alcohol. It's
easier to use a "disposable probe cover" every time a
temperature is taken. (You can purchase digital probe covers
here.)
Changing the Battery.
When the
upside-down arrow symbol appears in the lower right of the
display, the battery is depleted and must be replaced. Remove the
battery compartment lid. Use a small Phillips screwdriver to
remove the battery. Insert a new equivalent battery type (1.5V,
SF41). (You can purchase batteries
here.) Ensure that the battery
is correctly positioned with the "+" facing up or
towards the back of the unit. Carefully replace the battery
compartment lid. Ensure that the "O"-ring (washer)
is in place to maintain water resistance. Properly dispose
of the batteries according to local regulations, and keep
them away from small children and heat. WARNING: KEEP BATTERIES
OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. SWALLOWING BATTERIES COULD BE
HARMFUL. BATTERIES SHOULD NOT BE CHARGED OR PLACED INTO
EXTREME HEAT, AS THEY MAY EXPLODE.
